Mighty Oak Assistant Joins Niagara University Coaching Staff

AFC Ann Arbor Assistant Coach Mike Meyer, and longtime friend of Sporting Director Eric Rudland, has recently been named the Men's Assistant Coach at Niagara University. This is an exciting move for Mike, as he will join Niagara's Head Coach Bill Boyle for his first season in charge of the Purple Eagles.

Mike was an integral piece in AFC Ann Arbor's Technical staff for the 2016 season, helping orchestrate the Mighty Oak's midfield play in both team defending & attacking schemes. Along with his work on the training pitch, Mike was excellent in match analysis and management.

"I speak for the whole organization in saying that Mike was a key asset in our success this past summer in the NPSL, and he was a main guy for me in Lansing as well. It is tough to see him go, but I am really excited for this new chapter in his coaching career. Hopefully next summer we can sign a few of his players to join us for the 2017 season," said Rudland.

Not only was Mike instrumental in helping out AFC this past season, he has been a long standing member of the Ann Arbor soccer community for nearly 10 years. He first moved to Ann Arbor back in 2006 to work with the former Ann Arbor Youth Soccer Association and then went on to start Vardar Ann Arbor. Mike coached in the MSYSA Olympic Development Program and spent the 2015-16 season leading Vardar's U16 USSF Developmental Academy Team.

The AFC Ann Arbor Family would like to thank Mike for his tireless work and commitment to the Mighty Oak and wish him all the best at Niagara University! Check out Niagara's article on Mike's announcement here!

Inaugural NPSL Season Huge Success for The Mighty Oak

After completing the inaugural season in the Great Lakes Premier League (2015), the club’s front office set out looking to improve the quality of soccer within the organization. Two major off-season moves in the fall helped put The Mighty Oak on the path to a higher level of play. First, the hiring of Coach Rudland, followed shortly after by the move to the NPSL, positioned AFC Ann Arbor for a chance to make an impact in the league right away.

In his first year with AFC Ann Arbor, Head Coach & Sporting Director, Eric Rudland, wasted no time in creating a highly competitive atmosphere brining in top recruits from around the country and internationally.

When asked about the best moments of the season, Coach Rudland said,  "The best part of any season, for me, is building relationships with the players and now is a really a neat time for everyone involved in our 2016 campaign. Some of our players will be heading back to their college programs and we will track their progress this fall. Others are looking to chase their dream of pushing on to the next level and we are going to work hard to link those men up to our professional networks. there are also a handful of our players who are rooted in the community and will now turn their focus back to their coaching or day jobs. As for our staff, we will start putting things in place for an even better 2017."

The Mighty Oak spent most of the season atop the Great Lakes West division table, setting the tone for a competitive first year in the National Premier Soccer League. The club secured its first postseason berth in its inaugural NPSL season finishing ahead of teams like Detroit City FC, Lansing United and Kalamazoo FC.

AFC Ann Arbor finished the season with the second best record in the Great Lakes West division, earning a spot in the Midwest Region Semi-finals (playoffs). With over 90 teams competing in the NPSL nationally, securing a spot in the Sweet 16 put AFC Ann Arbor on the map as a serious contender for years to come.

Although the loss in the playoffs to AFC Cleveland in PKs was heartbreaking, The Mighty Oak’s success in year one of the NPSL shows a promising future for AFC Ann Arbor.

When asked about the 2016 team, Coach Rudland said, "I was really proud of our men all season long. Their desire to compete for the club was first class. Their mentality and commitment enabled us to make progress on the training pitch and experience success in league play. At the end of the day it's a players game and I commend them for their efforts."

Rudland added, "I told the men after the match that it's not necessarily the result that is most disappointing in the regional play-offs, it's the fact that we will never play another match together as teams always change from year to year."

Individual Awards

Standout striker Dario Suarez shared top honors earning the Golden Boot for the Great Lakes West division with (tied as the leading goal scorer with 6 goals).

The league is currently hosting a fan vote for NPSL awards but AFC Ann Arbor recognized a few players at the team’s end of season banquet.

Strength In The Oak – Willie Bayemi

The former Columbus Crew prospect played a huge role for The Mighty Oak this season, on and off the field.  A fan favorite, especially with the young ones, Bayemi embodied the “Strength In The Oak” mentality and was always found high-fiving kids, signing autographs (even after a tough loss) and spending time in the community spreading the game he loves so much.

Ironman- Bruno Oliveria

To play every minute of every match is a feat of it’s own, but to do so in such a compact season is absolutely impressive.  Left back Bruno Oliveria was one of two players for The Mighty Oak to play every minute of league play, filled with huge defensive plays all season long.  In addition to his defensive impact, Oliveria contributed one of the most memorable goals of the season as he scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Lansing United off a corner kick.

Hometown Hero- Leigh Rumbold

Although the British native wasn’t born and raised in Ann Arbor, the midfielder has made Washtenaw County home for a while now and took to the field for his first season with AFC Ann Arbor.  Often found wearing the captain’s armband, Rumbold played a pivotal role as the leader of The Mighty Oak.  Not only was his play in the midfield superb all season long but he also was pivotal in bringing the boys together and helping build a family amongst strangers so quickly.  For his leadership efforts, outstanding play and commitment to the club, Rumbold earned the Hometown Hero award for 2016.

Most Valuable Defensive Player- Matthew Braem

The center back was the only other player besides Bruno Oliveria to play every minute of league play for AFC Ann Arbor while playing a crucial role in The Mighty Oak’s backline.  The French native, also known as Frenchy to teammates and friends, was definitive in his play as one of the best defenders in the Midwest Region.

Most Valuable Offensive Player & OVERALL MVP- Dario Suarez

From the beginning of the season, fans took notice of Suarez’s exceptional skill and watched closely as he lead The Mighty Oak to a dominating start holding first place in the NPSL Great Lakes West for the first 8 weeks.  After a superb showing vs. Grand Rapids FC in the second annual Memorial Day Classic, Suarez earned a new nickname from the fans, which began chanting “Super Dario” anytime he gained possession of the ball. Suarez was tied for first in the Great Lakes West for most goals scored this season earning him a share of the Golden Boot, but it was his ability to bring the team together through leadership, hard work and sacrifice which was best highlighted in the last NPSL match of the season where led AFC Ann Arbor to a 2-0 victory over Kalamazoo FC securing the club’s first post-season berth.

Spectacular Season Ends in Heartbreaking Shootout

The Mighty Oak of AFC Ann Arbor went to Grand Rapids to take on AFC Cleveland in the NPSL Regional Playoffs on Friday night. After 120 minutes of extreme heat, and penalty kicks, AFC bowed out of the playoffs, losing 4-2 in the shootout.

The first half started brightly for The Mighty Oak. In the 6th minute, Leigh Rumbold climbed high to head back across the face of goal. The header was just inches away from Yuri Farkas’ head at the back post.  Another clear-cut chance came in the 12th minute. Bruno Oliveria’s effort went over the crossbar after an excellent overlapping run.

In the 17th minute, Ade Adeniyi was shown a yellow card, despite the player protesting his innocence to the referee. After the booking, the momentum shifted slightly, and AFC Cleveland began to work their way into the match.

The heat was a definite factor for both sides in this match. The referee had to call for a water break several times throughout the match, this first of which came in the 34th minute.

The half-time whistle couldn’t have come sooner for the players, and the sides went into the break level.

In what was a bizarre start to the second half, Hector Morales was issued a yellow-card for entering the field late and not checking into the game. Despite this incident, The Mighty Oak started the second half in positive fashion. In the 50th minute, Dario Suarez worked an angle and unleashed a dipping effort that flashed just inches wide of the far post.

The middle of the second half saw AFC Cleveland start to create more chances, earning several corners. This momentum was cut short when in the 76th minute; AFC Cleveland’s Coletun Long was issued a red card for his challenge on Ade Adeniyi. Ade was in on goal, but was ripped to the ground, denying him a clear goal scoring chance.  Bruno stepped up to take the ensuing free kick. His effort was just off target.

In the 83rd minute, it was Ade Adeniyi again playing an important role. He found himself one on one with the keeper, and his lobbed effort nestled in the back of the net. Despite the fine finish, the referee determined Ade was offside, and the goal did not stand.

In extra time, AFC Ann Arbor had an excellent chance to steal the match. Kevin Taylor’s headed effort was on it’s way in and was cleared off the line at the last possible moment to keep the score level. That was the last action of regular time. The referee blew his whistle, indicating the sides would play two fifteen-minute halves of extra-time to determine a winner.

The first half of extra-time began in similar fashion. The Mighty Oak were dictating possession and pressing high up the field to make things difficult for AFC Cleveland. In the 91st minute, Bruno Oliveria had another excellent opportunity, smashing a shot at the Cleveland keeper, who parried his shot clear.

In the 98th minute, Peter Tappenden made an exceptional save from a dipping free kick that was surely heading in.

The real drama began in the 103rd minute, when Dario Suarez buried a chance at the back post. As Dario and The Mighty Oak celebrated, the referee discussed the play with his assistants and, for the second time in the match, ruled that the goal did not count. It remained scoreless as the sides finished the first half of extra time.

On the other side of the break, Dario put the ball in the back of the net again, but again the referee ruled that Dario was in an offside position.

That was the last real action of extra time. With the scored locked at 0-0 after 120 minutes, it was a penalty kick shootout that would determine the winner.

AFC Cleveland won the coin toss and opted to take the first kick. They buried their chance. Bruno Oliveria stepped up for The Mighty Oak and converted to level the score. Cleveland again converted, and Matt Braem was up next for The Mighty Oak. He coolly slotted home, leveling the shootout once more.

Despite an exceptional save from Peter Tappenden on Cleveland’s next effort, Dario Suarez was unable to convert his penalty.

Cleveland converted again, and Kevin Taylor stepped up to take a crucial penalty. His effort was low and hard, but the Cleveland keeper saved well.

With one kick left, Cleveland only needed to score to advance to the regional finals. Cleveland’s Antonio Manfut stepped up and finished the match, and AFC Ann Arbor’s season came to a close.

It was a fantastic year for The Mighty Oak. The Clubs first season in the NPSL saw us make the NPSL playoffs. This was a huge achievement for the team, and a great building block moving forward.

AFC Ann Arbor Head Coach Eric Rudland was pleased with his first season in charge of the club and feels there are definitely positives to take forward.  “It’s been neat just to see us build a solid team on the soccer side of things and then obviously now its about ‘Hey what can we do to build from what we’ve created this year?’” he said.

Rudland added, “We want to be a resource for each and every guy who played for us this year moving forward. Whether it’s helping their college program, post-college career, whatever it might be. That’s the cool thing now is to see us maintain relationships with the guys who were with us.”

AFC Ann Arbor Drops Friendly to Columbus Crew CP

The Mighty Oak of AFC Ann Arbor hosted the Columbus Crew Collegiate Program at Hollway Field on Friday night. The match was the first of two friendlies before the NPSL Regional Playoffs begin. The Mighty Oak lost 1-0, despite a good showing from some new faces in the side.

The first half started with the Crew looking to impose their will on the match.  The Crew had the better of the scoring chances in the opening 25 minutes. Ahinga Selemani forced several good saves from Mighty Oak keeper Peter Tappenden, but ultimately he couldn’t find the back of the net.  The sides went in level at the break.

AFC started the second half looking like the better side, controlling the ball well and getting the better opportunities in the final third. In the 54th minute, Dario Suarez cut inside his defender and fired a shot, but his effort flew wide of the post.

In the 60th minute, AFC looked to have earned a penalty. Again it was Dario cutting inside the opposition right back. He played a one-two with Hector Morales at the top of the box, but was chopped down as he attempted to run through. However, the ref ruled Dario offside for his attempted run, and no penalty was given.

In the 71st minute, the Crew got on the score sheet for what proved to be the winner. After a quick throw in, the Crew found space on the right wing, and crossed to the back post where a Crew runner was waiting to tap home. 1-0.

With 19 minutes to go The Mighty Oak made several substitutions. Yuri Farkas came back into the team after a short absence in the side and played well in the closing minutes of the game.

In the end, the changes were not enough to grab a late equalizer, and The Mighty Oak lost the friendly, 1-0.

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was midfielder Jake Rufe. Rufe was excellent, covering serious ground and shutting down Crew attacks throughout.

The Mighty Oak take the field for another friendly on Tuesday, July 19th, at 7:00pm at Hollway Field, against San Marino.

Friday Night Friendly Filled with Familiar Faces, Future Pros

Friday evenings friendly at Hollway Field brings the Columbus Crew Collegiate Program to town along with some familiar faces.

Former AFC Ann Arbor striker, and Pioneer High School graduate, Ahinga Selemani, will be squaring up against AFC as he suits up for the Crew.  Selemani, a standout player from a young age in this town having representing the United States at the youth level, played alongside Mighty Oak players Tristan Jacob, Zach and Chase Pagani and Peter Tappenden growing up.

Selemani is coming off a very successful season with the Gauchos of the University of California-Santa Barbara, where he played with current AFC Ann Arbor defender, Ade Adeniyi.  The two will find themselves in opposing kits Friday night after becoming close teammates during their NCAA playoff run that ended in the Sweet 16 against No. 2 ranked Clemson.

In addition to Selemani, two current Michigan soccer players will also be appearing for the Columbus Crew CP Friday evening in Andre Morris and Riley Woods.

Although the match is a friendly, the environment of familiar faces and hometown reunions will boast for a very exciting and electric atmosphere for the players and fans alike.  Not to mention a natural Columbus vs Ann Arbor rivalry, tonight’s match has all the makings of a high profile non-conference matchup under the lights.

Tickets for tonight's match are available for purchase online until 6pm and will also be available at the gate.

The Mighty Oak Are Playoff Bound

After a difficult loss on Friday in Grand Rapids, AFC Ann Arbor went to Kalamazoo on Sunday in a must-win situation. With a playoff berth on the line, The Mighty Oak came to Kalamazoo ready for battle, and took a 2-0 win over Kalamazoo FC, and an NPSL regional playoff spot back to Ann Arbor.

The first half started brightly for the Mighty Oak, and in the 10th minute it was Dario Suarez who capitalized. Bruno Oliveria sent a trademark cross into the box and Dario’s header went flying past the keeper to make it 1-0.

The Mighty Oak enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half, but were unable to make the most of their chances. The sides went in at the break with AFC leading, 1-0.

AFC made sure the result would hold, adding a second goal 15 minutes into the second half. Leigh Rumbold’s flicked header from a corner found Kevin Taylor unmarked at the top of the six-yard box and he buried the chance. 2-0.

The second goal seemed to really take the life out of Kalamazoo, but with 30 minutes left, it took a tremendous team effort to make sure of the result. Substitutes Nate Johnson, Noah Kleedtke, James Vaughan, and Dumisani Manyange came on to get some fresh legs in the side.

Both goals came from corners, and AFC Ann Arbor head coach Eric Rudland was happy with the way his team handled set pieces, both offensively and defensively.

“At this level, we talk about winning the match in both 18 yard boxes. So we needed to win it defensively in our box, and we needed to win it in the attacking 18-yard box. Both those set piece goals were first class,” he said.

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was goal scorer Kevin Taylor. KT’s header gave The Mighty Oak the extra push to close out a critical away match.

Today's match marked a historic day for AFC Ann Arbor by completing their first season in the National Premier Soccer League as well as securing the club's first postseason berth.

The Mighty Oak will travel to Grand Rapids on July 22nd (time TBD), the host site for the 2016 Midwest Region Playoffs, to square off against Great Lakes East Division Champs, AFC Cleveland.

AFC Ann Arbor Drops Road Battle to Grand Rapids FC

AFC Ann Arbor travelled west Friday evening to face Grand Rapids FC. GRFC came into the game in first place in the NPSL Great Lakes West, with AFC hot on their heels. A win would have likely secured a postseason berth for The Mighty Oak, but it was not to be as Grand Rapids strengthened their grip on first place, winning 3-1.

The first half was tight, with both sides struggling to gain dominance in the match. AFC saw plenty of the ball, but the better chances came for Grand Rapids. Several of their efforts would have certainly found their way into the back of the net if it weren't for the goalkeeping heroics of AFC's Peter Tappenden. Peter was immense throughout the match, but particularly in the first half, in which he made several excellent saves. The sides went into the break level at 0-0.

The second half started brightly for The Mighty Oak, and straight from the kick off AFC won a corner. Captain Leigh Rumbold made it count and buried the header in at the back post. 1-0.

The lead didn't last long though, and Grand Rapids fought their way back into the match from a long throw in. GRFC defender Trent Vegter's monster throw in made it all the way to the AFC back post where Jared Timmer headed in to level the scores. 1-1.

In the 75th minute, Grand Rapids scored again to take the lead. Second half substitute Noble Sullivan capitalized on a broken down play and rounded Peter Tappenden to slide in Grand Rapids' second goal of the match. 2-1.

With only 15 minutes to play, The Mighty Oak had to press hard to get back in the match. However, this pressing left some gaps at the back and in the last minute of normal time, Grand Rapids took their chance again. In a one-on-one with Peter Tappenden, Gabe Mateo made sure the result would hold, as he found the back of the net to make it 3-1, GRFC.

AFC kept fighting until the last minute, but in the end it wasn't enough to avoid a bitter away defeat.

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was Captain Leigh Rumbold. Leigh scored a good goal and dominated the middle of pitch for The Mighty Oak.

In a busy weekend, AFC will play their next NPSL match on Sunday away against Kalamazoo FC. The next home match at Hollway Field for the Mighty Oak is on Friday July 15th, at 7:00pm, against Columbus Crew CP.

Road Tests Will Determine Postseason Fate

AFC Ann Arbor will visit Grand Rapids tonight as a 2nd place team for the first time ever this season. The host, GRFC, now sit in first place of the Great Lakes West. Tonight's match, kicking off at 7:45pm, will be the first of two road NPSL tests for The Mighty Oak as the men will travel to Kalamazoo Sunday for a matchup against Kalamazoo City FC kicking off at 6:05pm.

Sunday's road match will conclude NPSL regular season play for the club meaning The Mighty Oak must finish the weekend in one of the top two table slots of the Great Lakes West to be guaranteed postseason play. The storied matchup against GRFC highlights the weekend as it will feature the 1st and 2nd place clubs, but only a win in both matches over the weekend will secure a spot for AFC Ann Arbor as other teams in the table still have points to steal in their respective schedules.

As a part or our Mighty Oak Monday series with coach Eric Rudland, we wanted to pick his brain as we enter the biggest weekend in club history. In the same fashion, we interviewed our own head coach in regards to the team's mindset and form heading into two matches that will define our season. Read the entire piece here including audio from coach.

Our club has no choice but to move on quickly from a tough defeat last Friday. How do you keep a team focused on solely game #1 of a duel match weekend, knowing that with 2 wins something very special could be accomplished?

Yes last Sunday was not the result that we wanted but in this business you have to have a short-term memory. So we're very much looking forward to our first match of the weekend on Friday in Grand Rapids. With a two match weekend like this it's difficult to prepare for both opponents, so our training for the most part has focused on our first match and then Saturday we will spend time focusing on our Sunday match up.

Like all football played at this high a level, we have seen some injuries and suspensions affect our roster. As a seasoned coach in this league you have tweaked rosters for success numerous times in your past. Can you speak to what it will take out of some of the newer faces seeing increased minutes in such important matches this weekend?

We feel good about our group. Obviously we won't have Jack Smith due to the suspension and a few other players have moved on their way and are no longer with the club. With that said, we do have some players who have been chipping away and waiting to break into the team. Some of those men will have a great opportunity this weekend to make a positive impact.

The Mighty Oak now sit in second place in the league, after spending the entire season in first, does a coach in your position appreciate where his team sits in the table going into such pivotal matches? Does it cause a team to play a certain way tactically or provide any advantages/ disadvantages?

After sitting at the top of the league for the season and now being in second place I think that creates a hunger and ambition to get back to the top of the table. I don't think much changes tactically or technically as we've had a lot of success with our personnel, schemes & our system. However the psychological elements and desire to compete & succeed will be heightened going into the weekend.

Scoring a single goal on the road is a heightened feat in itself in the NPSL. Can you speak to your confidence in this team's ability to score goals in back to back road venues?

I'm definitely confident in our ability on the road. As mentioned earlier we will take it one game at a time. After Friday's match we will use Saturday to get right & ready for Kalamazoo on Sunday.

Playoff Berth Postponed After Tough Home Loss

AFC Ann Arbor squared off against Detroit City FC at Hollway field on Sunday night. A win would secure an NPSL regional play-off place for The Mighty Oak; a win for DCFC would keep their play-off dream alive. The energy was electric from the first kick.

The first half was an effort by both teams to gain control. AFC sat in deep and packed men behind the ball in the first half, hoping to stifle the attacking options of Detroit. This worked well and the sides went in deadlocked at the break.

The second half started all AFC. In the 56th minute, Willy Bayemi pressurized the DCFC backline, winning the ball off an unsuspecting Detroit center back. One on one, he collected the ball, dribbled around the keeper, and slotted home to give the Mighty Oak a 1-0 lead.

The next 15 minutes saw more attacking play from AFC. Willy Bayemi spearheaded the attack and gave the opposition back line plenty of problems, winning several corners. Unfortunately for The Mighty Oak, these chances were not taken. Detroit City was quick to make AFC pay for the missed opportunities.

In the 74th minute, DCFC’s Cyrus Saydee grabbed the first real chance of the match for City, collecting the ball in the box and lobbing Fabian Veit in the AFC net. 1-1.

In the 80th minute, Cyrus Saydee was involved again, taking a corner that made its way through a scrum in the box to Tyler Moorman, who converted the chance to make it 2-1 for Detroit.

Things went from bad to a whole lot worse just three minutes later, when Saydee pounced on a back pass that was a little short for Fabian Veit to clear. Veit’s attempted clearance took a big deflection, but the ball ended up in the back of the AFC Ann Arbor goal, making it 3-1.

In the 90th minute, Jack Smith was issued a red card for a hard challenge on DCFC’s Spiro Pliakos. A scuffle ensued, but the referee took no further action except to separate the players.

There were no other real chances for AFC to get back in the game. The referee blew the whistle, confirming the 3-1 loss for AFC Ann Arbor.

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was Willy Bayemi. Willy scored a great goal and created problems for the opposition throughout.

The result was humbling for the men, but AFC Ann Arbor coach Eric Rudland remains confident moving forward.

“It’s really about regrouping now,” he said. “We need to learn to be a little more resilient and keep our composure […], we’ll use this result to be better next game.”

AFC Ann Arbor plays the next match away, Friday, July 8th against Grand Rapids FC. The next home Match for the Mighty Oak is a friendly on Friday, July 15th, at 7:00pm against Columbus Crew CP.

After dropping a tough loss to Detroit City FC, 1-3, Coach Rudland speaks to the matches challenges.

Match Preview: AFC Ann Arbor vs Detroit City FC [with audio from Coach Rudland]

A little over a month has passed since AFC Ann Arbor traveled to Hamtramck to face Detroit City FC for the inaugural match at Keyworth Stadium. Playing in front of nearly 7,500 fans, The Mighty Oak picked up a tough road point in the first meeting between the two clubs and will look to secure three points with a win on Sunday

The Mighty Oak have lead the way all season long and will look to remain top of the table in the Great Lakes West Division with a victory on July 3rd.  Sunday’s match up marks the final NPSL home match for AFC Ann Arbor in the regular season, with just two remaining matches left to complete the 12-game NPSL season (at GRFC 7/8, at KZooFC 7/10).

The Mighty Oak are expecting the highest home attendance in club history. After an amazing turnout against Lansing United at Hollway Field on June 17th, which propelled AFC towards a late 3-2 comeback, The Mighty Oak are expecting an even larger turnout come Sunday at 6pm.

To qualify for postseason play, AFC Ann Arbor will need to finish in first or second of the Great Lakes West Division and the race is heating up.  Grand Rapids FC heads to Detroit City FC Friday evening, and with a win, can tie The Mighty Oak for first place, with the Michigan Stars and Detroit City FC still in the mix as well.

AFC Ann Arbor Remain Top After Tough Road Result

The Mighty Oak of AFC Ann Arbor went on the road to take on Michigan Stars on Sunday afternoon. The only loss of the season to date came at the hands of Stars, and the men were looking to avenge that loss with an away win of their own.

The opening ten minutes were frantic and neither side was able to control possession. The game settled down a bit, and it was Stars with the better chances. In the 12th minute a Michigan Stars free kick found a head in The Mighty Oak box. The ball flew past everyone including Fabian Veit in the AFC net but the effort hit the crossbar and stayed out.

Then it was The Mighty Oak’s turn to go on the offensive. After earning a corner in the 21st minute, Bruno Oliveria sent in a corner to find the run of Hector Morales, but his header flashed inches over the Stars crossbar.

The remainder of the first half was dominated by AFC Ann Arbor in both possession and chances.

The second half began in much the same way. AFC was controlling the ball and looking for a way through a compact Stars defense.

In the 50th minute it was Hector Morales again on the attack. After an excellent overlapping run and cross from Bruno Oliveria, Hector’s effort could only find the post, but still stayed out. The Mighty Oak were made to pay for their wasted chances in the 75th minute.

After a Michigan Stars counter attack, a bouncing ball at the top of the eighteen yard box was struck well by Jon Rubio, and there was little Veit (or any keeper) could have done to keep the effort out.  1-0 to Michigan Stars, with just over 15 minutes of play remaining.

The Mighty Oak looked to hit back and with 3 minutes remaining, did just that. Kevin Taylor was taken down inside the opposition box and a penalty was the obvious choice.  Super Dario, who had been a spark on offense the whole match, stepped up. He coolly converted the spot kick to level the match at 1-1.

With only a few minutes left, the chances started coming thick and fast for AFC Ann Arbor, but in the end it just wasn’t to be. The match ended 1-1.

The Mighty Oak showed tremendous spirit to fight back into the tough away game, and head coach Eric Rudland was pleased with the effort from both the starters and subs in this match.

“[Our] Guys are fighters,” He said. “They have a lot of pride, they are playing with some conviction. We knew that tonight was an important night, so we were hopeful for the three points, but one will obviously do based on the situation of the game, going down a goal.”

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was Matt Braem. ‘Frenchy’ was excellent at the back all game and his tough tackling kept The Mighty Oak in the match.

AFC Ann Arbor head back to Hollway with a hard earned away point. The men will take this week to prepare for Sunday July 3, at 6:00 pm, when AFC Ann Arbor host Detroit City FC in a crucial NSPL matchup at Hollway Field.

The Mighty Oak Look to Avenge Sole Loss This Sunday

After an exhilarating comeback last week against Lansing United when AFC Ann Arbor overcame a 2-0 deficit with only 11 minutes left in the game, The Mighty Oak head to Pontiac this Sunday to face the Michigan Stars. The Stars remain the only team to defeat AFC Ann Arbor after a 2-1 comeback late in the second half in their first meeting on June 3rd.

The Michigan Stars will treat this game as if it were a playoff matchup. They are battling with Grand Rapids FC, and The Mighty Oak to gain entrance into the NPSL regional tournament. The match is as important for the Stars as it is The Mighty Oak. A victory for either side will ensure movement at the top of the Great Lakes West conference.

AFC Ann Arbor remains unbeaten in league play on the road and look to continue that trend by earning another tough road result.  With just four league matches remaining in the 2016 campaign, three of which will be away fixtures, the club will look for the continued support of the Main Street Hooligans and other traveling fans.

The match, set to kick-off at 5pm, will be tweeted live so be sure to follow along at @afcannarbor on Twitter.

To hear more about the team and this weekend’s match up, listen to Coach Rudland and assistant coach Boyzzz Khumalo on their weekly radio show on WTKA Sports Talk 1050AM with Sam Webb and Ira Weintraub.

Crazy Comeback Keeps The Mighty Oak In First

After last weeks 1-0 victory against Lansing United on the road, it was The Mighty Oak’s turn to play host. Lansing United and AFC Ann Arbor are familiar foes and this game promised action and drama from the start.

The first half was a possession game for both sides. Despite each team possessing the ball for long spells, neither was able to create much going forward.

The second half was a different story. In the 48th minute, Lansing United’s Lukas Muszong scored from long range to give the visitors an early second half lead.  This forced AFC’s hand and the men looked to press forward and equalize. The attack from the Mighty Oak left spaces at the back and Lansing again capitalized.

In the 68th minute, immediately after two Lansing substitutions, United took advantage of a throw deep into AFC territory. James Decosemo put Lansing up 2-0 after some sloppy defending. However, this was far from the last of the action.

In the 79th minute, AFC substitute Willy Bayemi gave The Mighty Oak a lifeline. He finished the move at the third time of asking after Lansing keeper James Hague saved his two initial shots.

9 minutes later, Hector Morales got in on the action and leveled the match at 2-2, pouncing smartly on a loose ball in the Lansing box. With four minutes to play, the match looked certain to finish level, but The Mighty Oak had the momentum and the home support.

In the 89th minute, just three minutes after his first goal of the evening, Hector Morales scored the winning goal in dramatic fashion. Tristan Jacobs’ shot from the top of the eighteen-yard box was parried right into Hector’s path and he made no mistake, giving the Mighty Oak of AFC Ann Arbor an incredible come-from-behind victory.

AFC coach Eric Rudland was impressed with the response from the entire team and had particular praise for Willy Bayemi, who was the first player to be substituted into the match for The Mighty Oak. “I thought Willy [had] his best performance of the year so far for us.” He said. “He was a game changer. The guys around him built on his energy.”

The result leaves The Mighty Oak firmly in first place in the NPSL Great Lakes West.

The Audi of Ann Arbor Man of the Match was Hector Morales, a fine performance capped by two crucial goals.

AFC Ann Arbor returns to action, Sunday, June 26th as they travel to Pontiac to take on the Michigan Stars. The Mighty Oak take the field at Hollway again on Sunday, July 3rd, to host Detroit City FC
