Josh Hakala Joins AFCAA as Lead Commentator

Josh Hakala - Lisa Burnett - BTN.jpg

When it comes to broadcasting matches live, AFC Ann Arbor take pride in providing top-quality streams that fans all over the world can watch. With that, it is necessary for top-quality commentary as well. AFCAA are pleased to announce lead announcer Josh Hakala ahead of the 2019 season. Hakala will supply the broadcast with an instant dose of knowledge about the beautiful game, while also bringing a Michigan flair as a native Michigander himself. He’ll be on the call for both the men’s and women’s home matches for the entire season.

When it comes to credibility, Hakala has it in spades. As the creator and senior editor of TheCup.us, he helms the most popular site dedicated exclusively to U.S. Open Cup coverage, a match made in heaven with The Mighty Oak entering their third straight USOC. Additionally, Hakala has worked for the Big Ten Network while also performing play-by-play duties for the likes of Chicago Fire, Charleston Battery, and Michigan Bucks, among plenty more clubs. He currently serves as an on-air personality for Michigan Radio.

On joining the AFCAA Family, Hakala said, “For nearly 20 years, play-by-play has been a passion of mine and to be able to call games in the city where I have called home for the last 11 years, and for a top-notch club like AFC Ann Arbor, it was an offer that was too good to pass up.” As a lover of soccer, he also said of his passion for the sport, “I have played soccer since I was 4 years old and I grew up following the sport…once I realized that I wasn't good enough to play the game at the top level, I made it a goal to cover the game as a journalist and a broadcaster at the top level.” He has certainly done so, and he will be able to bring those experiences to every AFC broadcast this season.

“I have covered soccer in Michigan for more than 20 years, and it has come a long way,” Hakala said of the sport in the state. “We used to have just a couple of amateur teams competing at the national level, and now there are so many more teams. And it's not just the number of teams, but the quality of those teams.” Comparing it to a conference he has covered, Hakala continued, “It's almost like the Big Ten Conference in most years in college sports, where there's so much talent, and so many top-notch programs, that they just end up beating each other up and developing some fierce rivalries.”

When asked about what about being a commentator appealed to him, Hakala said, “I love being a part of live events and being the eyes and ears for the fans.” He added that, “The role of conveying the drama of a sporting event to an audience, and making sure the fans at home have all the information they need to understand and enjoy the game, is a job that I enjoy and take very seriously.” As The Mighty Oak continue to strive to put forward a fantastic on-pitch, Hakala will make sure the booth is held down as well and is just as enjoyable to listen to as The Mighty Oak will be to watch.

“Fans can expect a passion for the game and they can count on an announcer that is well-prepared,” Hakala responded when asked about what fans can expect out of him as a play-by-play announcer. A well-studied announcer who takes the game experience very seriously, he said, “Fans deserve a quality production and I plan on delivering that during what should be an exciting 2019 season.” He would add that, “It's a great time to be a soccer fan in the state of Michigan,” and that is certainly the truth.

Amadou Cisse Returns for Third Season with AFCAA

AFC vs GRFC -20170529-67.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor are excited to announce the return of Amadou Cisse to The Mighty Oak ahead of the 2019 campaign. Cisse was with the side on trial for the early stages of preseason, but it has been confirmed that he will join The Mighty Oak for what will be his third season with the club – previously playing in Ann Arbor in 2015 and 2017. Cisse is familiar with the entire state of Michigan as he spent time in 2016 with Kalamazoo FC and 2018 with Michigan Bucks. Very familiar with the state of Michigan, he is a welcome addition to the side.

In addition to his time with AFCAA that made an impression on the staff, he also has spent plenty of time earning accolades elsewhere. Cisse started at least nine games in each of his four seasons at Madonna University. As a senior in 2016, Cisse earned the WHAC’s Offensive Player of the Year Award as he scored eleven goals while chipping in twelve assists for a final point total of 34, top in the conference. His final career totals included 27 goals and 30 assists, which were, at the time of his graduation, top-five numbers in Madonna school history.

At the club level, Cisse also impressed. He brought home the 2016 Offensive Player of the Year Award from Kalamazoo FC as well which earned him a spot in that year’s Midwest Pro Soccer Combine. Recently, he earned a trial with Detroit City FC where he starred in DCFC’s early friendly in Chattanooga, in which the Detroit News gave his performance rave reviews, calling him the “most impressive” of the City newcomers. A well-traveled man, not even touching upon his stint with the Bucks, the fact that teams continually inquire about his availability highlights his top-class talent at the NPSL level.

On his return, Cisse said of the club as a whole, “AFCAA has always had a place in my heart, right from the moment the club was founded.” As a member of the inaugural squad, Cisse is a long-running member of the AFCAA Family. His favorite memory stems from that first season as well, as he wrote:

DSC_4262.jpg

“I would say my favorite memory with the club was back in 2015 when we travelled down to Muskegon to play against Risers. I believe it was the last road game of the inaugural season for the club. That game, in my opinion, was the best game of that season. The passion, hard work, and determination from every player that travelled was phenomenal. We were down 1-0 and when Kyle [Breitmeyer] scored in the 86th minute to tie the game, it honestly felt like we had won a championship match. I can still remember running down the sideline with Kyle towards Bilal [Saeed] and the rest of the fans who travelled down to support. It was a great feeling ending the season strong.”

As someone with a passion for the club, he not only has the understanding of the club but the obvious skills as well. “Amadou brings athleticism and pace to our front line,” said Eric Rudland of his newest front man for the 2019 season. He would also add, “He has a lot of experience at our level of football locally and should be a player we can rely on early for quality.” When assessing himself, Cisse said, “I personally think my greatest strength as a player has to be my speed, just like everyone else believes.” Those who have seen Cisse play would certainly agree with that assessment as his deadly pace allows him to get into good attacking positions as an outlet for an attack. That does suit, and has suited him well in the up-tempo attack of Rudland’s system.

Cisse’s return to the club is cause from a great deal of excitement from the attacker on a personal level. “What I enjoy the most at AFCAA is the fact that you have guys from different places, cultures and countries; and yet we all have this amazing relationship as if we are all from the same roots,” he said speaking on the diversity of the club. Indeed, born in Guinea, Cisse adds another country of representation on a men’s side that will see four continents represented this upcoming season. “Every moment spent with the team and everyone involved with the club is greatly enjoyable,” he would also add, showing a true passion for the club and city. Hoping for the “best season yet”, fans will certainly feel the same way as they welcome another returnee into the fold.

Olivia Borgdorff Joins The Mighty Oak

borg3.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor is excited to announce Belleville native, Olivia Borgdorff to the AFC Ann Arbor Women’s team. Borgdorff is a junior at Aquinas and was recruited from Schoolcraft as a junior college transfer. Her current coach was looking to fill a need on his team with older leadership which he found in Borgdoff. She is a community leadership major and was captain of her team at Schoolcraft.

With the buzz around AFC adding a women’s team, it was her previous coach from Schoolcraft that had heard about the addition and told her she should try out. After taking a gap year after high school, Borgdorff walked on to the team at Schoolcraft. “I did missions with Youth With a Mission in England and Greece for 8 months and worked with Syrian refugees and backpacked in Spain for 5 weeks. It was a super cool experience but I wanted a shot at playing college ball. Walking on to Schoolcraft’s team was such a unique opportunity.”

While at Schoolcraft Borgdorff helped the Ocelots to back-to-back Region XII championships and back-to-back National Qualifier appearances. At her first National Qualifier game, she was called up after two starters suddenly couldn’t play. Borgdorff said, “I'd worked hard all season but hadn't got much PT and I finally got my break on the national stage. Hard work pays off!”

borg.jpg

After attending practices with the Legacy last year an ankle injury kept her sidelined most of the summer. After training a ton on her own to get healthy, she’s looking forward to having a team to play with this summer  and is excited to be close to friends and family while playing for AFCAA. Looking forward to staying active before heading into her senior year at Aquinas, Borgdorff “can’t wait to be a part of a new program and help build it from the ground up.”

Borgdorff grew up playing on a boys team and learned early on how to be tough and take a hit. She’s conditioned into building an attack and playing into feet and looks for opportunities to get up and down the sidelines. She has run the Detroit marathon and is looking forward to bringing her skills to Ann Arbor.

William Eskay Joins AFC Ann Arbor

Eskay17CUJA059.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor are excited to announce the addition of William Eskay to its 2019 roster. Eskay is coming off not only a decorated career with the William & Mary Tribe, but also his first ever professional campaign with Harrisburg Heat in the MASL. With experience already in the league with FC Frederick, Eskay is a signing that provides both experience and talent to the side.

With William & Mary, Eskay impressively started all 76 games he made an appearance in, serving as a four-year starter in the program. He was a three-time All-CAA Team selection, chosen to the Third Team as a sophomore and junior, and the Second Team as a senior in 2017. Eskay finished with double-digit point totals in all four of his seasons and ended his career with nineteen goals and twenty assists. He saw a career-high in goals during his sophomore season with seven, and followed that up with a junior season that included a career-high in assists with seven to go along with five goals. His final season saw him end with three goals and six assists as he helped send the Tribe to their first NCAA Tournament since 2013.

At the NPSL level, Eskay is similarly accomplished, and returning to that level is a part of his goals for the season. “Last year with the NPSL side FC Frederick, I made the All-Conference top XI team and the All-Region top XI team, so I will strive to make both of those teams again,” Eskay told AFCAA. FC Frederick finished third in the Mid-Atlantic Conference in the Northeast Region and were helped along with strong performances by Eskay.

Even more recently, though, is Eskay’s strong professional performance in his rookie year with Harrisburg Heat. If Harrisburg sounds familiar, that would be because Matt Braem, AFCAA icon and returnee for the 2019 season, spent his first professional season with Harrisburg as well. This was vital to Eskay’s signing with AFCAA as he said, “There were two main proponents that attracted me to AFCAA. The first is Ann Arbor itself, I am very excited to live in the area and experience the city. The Second and the main driving force is Matt Braem.” With high praise for Braem, Eskay would continue, “Both Matt and I shared successful rookie seasons at the Heat and came from similar backgrounds as NCAA Div. 1 players. Matt spoke very highly or the organization, coach, teammates, and the area. Needless to say, I was convinced after a short conversation that I wanted to be a part of the group.” If the AFCAA Family needed any more reason to love the man known as ‘Frenchy’, the fact that he helped bring along top-tier teammates to play a season in Ann Arbor is a great reason.

Eric Rudland acknowledged that Eskay’s signing is happening later in the preseason stage, but that is no grave matter. “William is a player that has come on our radar late in the process, but all of the feedback on him is super positive,” Rudland shared. “He has some athletic traits that make him a commodity, along with positional versatility.” As is the case with so many members of The Mighty Oak, that versatility makes him prized in Rudland’s system, and it is something Eskay takes pride in. “Since college the biggest change that has helped me greatly at the pro level is I have grown to be very versatile,” Eskay told AFCAA. With the ability to play positions from outside back to striker, “and everything in between” he added, he offers an added dimension to any line-up he may be involved in.

As a player, Eskay said he has a tough time talking about his own strengths. He did, however, offer this quote for his previous collegiate coach that summarized his game well: "He is a dynamic, game-changing, attacking player. William has exceptional speed and quickness, with and without the ball.  He relishes being relied upon to score goals.” Expanding upon that, Rudland offered this, “He should hit the ground running as he is in shape and good form coming off his indoor season.”

Not only a top-quality player, but Eskay understands the community aspect that comes with being a member of AFC Ann Arbor. “Off the field I intend to get fully involved with AFCAA Community and help to grow the organization as a whole,” Eskay shared. He also added more team-oriented goals, saying, “I would love to help AFCAA win the conference again and to make a run in the open cup.” The Mighty Oak will get their first chance to step towards a USOC run on May 8th at 7 PM as they venture out to Lansing to take on Lansing Ignite.

Eskay’s message to the fans as a whole is, “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to be a part of the group.” With loads of experience and proven quality at a multitude of levels, The Mighty Oak are excited to have him within the squad.

AFC Ann Arbor Welcomes Ian McGrane

McGrane_DSC_0082-2.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor are pleased to welcome Ian McGrane to the club ahead of the 2019 season. McGrane is coming off a strong senior season with the South Carolina Gamecocks and will join an already-impressive stable of goalkeepers along with the club. A native of Kingston, Pennsylvania, McGrane spent two years with Green Bay before transferring over to South Carolina where he eventually became the starting netminder for his senior season. Familiar with a high level of competition, McGrane has most recently been a member of SC United Bantams, now a USL League Two side located in Columbia, South Carolina, but also has previously spent time with FC Miami City, also a current USL League Two side.

As a senior, McGrane got the start in ten of his eleven appearances, ultimately ending up with a 6-5 record for a Gamecocks team that went 7-10. McGrane played all ninety minutes for two shutouts, both 1-0 in back-to-back games in C-USA conference play. He also played 45 minutes in two other shutouts with the side. He held a 1.07 GAA while making 35 saves on the season, including a seven save night against Georgetown. In total, McGrane played over 920 minutes on the season.

In his PDL (now USL League Two) career, McGrane was able to prove his worth with SC United over the past two seasons. In 2017 and 2018, he finished with a combined fourteen appearances with 1,100 minutes and a GAA of 1.06. He would also hold a save-percentage of 81.7% while making 58 saves. Looking ahead to the season to come, McGrane said, “One of the first things that Coach Rudland spoke to me about was the community of Ann Arbor and the support they give during the matches for the team.” He also added, “I’m excited to see the city and fans.”

There is certainly an excited buzz when it comes to bringing McGrane in. Eric Rudland said about his newest netminder, “Ian is a GK who has pro trajectory and we are excited to welcome him to the club.” The Mighty Oak consistently take pride in their goalies that are knocking on the professional level’s door, and McGrane is no different. In talking about what sets him apart from other keepers, Rudland discussed strengths of his, saying, “His physique makes him an imposing figure and he has the capacity to make big saves.” Standing at 6’5”, McGrane is most certainly, as Rudland describes, imposing when standing in front of the net. The hope will be that when in the match, his presence will help the defense play a bit freer with trust in yet another high-level keeper, as McGrane himself agrees with, saying, “I believe my presence in goal is something that stands out. It’s something that my teammates can feed off of and become motivated from.”

With plenty of high-level experience, McGrane comes into the 2019 season already having been fully embedded within a culture of hard work and determination. “Anyone who has played sports in college knows the demand needed to perform at a high level,” McGrane told AFCAA. “The trainings at University of South Carolina are tactically and physically asking of the players.” As is a common theme with those who have already spent time within the AFCAA organization, the complementary nature players have of the training sessions from coach Rudland should be able to similarly allow McGrane to achieve higher levels of play. This is something Rudland agrees with, as he says, “He has the mentality to compete for time in the goal and will bring quality to our group of already committed GK's.”

When asked about what he is personally looking forward to for the season to come, the South Carolina keeper responded by saying, “This will be a new experience playing with a new staff and teammates for me this season.” He added on to this statement, saying, “I look forward starting the season strong like I’ve seen this team do in the past and to the successes that will come in the NPSL and Open Cup.” As he also looks forward to the success that will hope to be worked towards this season, certainly the fans will be looking ahead for the same reasons.

The Mighty Oak Set to Travel to Lansing for First Round Open Cup

opencup_1stround.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor’s U.S. Open Cup First Round draw has been confirmed. The Mighty Oak will take on Lansing Ignite on May 8th in Lansing. The match will take place at 7 PM at Cooley Law School Stadium. We will provide updates on ticket accessibility as it becomes apparent.

The Mighty Oak continue to expand upon their illustrious club history with their third consecutive trip to the USOC. AFCAA are the only current NPSL side to have represented the league in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 USOCs. Despite success in qualifying, The Mighty Oak are looking for their first victory in the cup competition as the side lost 1-0 to Michigan Bucks in 2017 in Pontiac, and in a home bout last season, fell to Ocean City Nor’easters 3-0 at Eastern Michigan’s Scicluna Field.

“It’s an honor to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup for a third year in a row,” said head coach Eric Rudland. He continued, saying, “We are hopeful that we can put together a competitive team for our opening match.” The early-May fixture means that The Mighty Oak may not have every player coming in for the summer at their disposal, but if recent history is able to show anything, AFCAA always takes their USOC bouts with the utmost seriousness.

About the Opponent

Lansing Ignite partake in USL League One – the third tier of U.S. soccer. The club are in their first season of existence and led by head coach Nate Miller. In terms of personnel, eleven countries are represented on the roster, including Haiti, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, and England. They opened the season with a 3-2 victory over Richmond Kickers on the road but followed that with a 2-1 away loss to Greenville Triumph. They presently sit fifth in the early, early, stages of the ten team league.

Yazeed Matthews Joins AFC Ann Arbor

DSC_0102.JPG

AFC Ann Arbor are excited to announce the signing of Yazeed Matthews to The Mighty Oak ahead of the 2019 season. Matthews is a South African native who adds even more international flair to an AFCAA side that now spans across four continents. Matthews has spent the past two seasons with Coastal Carolina, and before that he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Tyler Junior College. He most recently took part of the Midwest Pro Soccer Combine, and he becomes the fourth member of this season’s iteration of The Mighty Oak to have partook in the 2019 event (Jake Rufe, Henry Ramirez, James Vaughan).

Matthews is coming off a stellar senior campaign where he was arguably one of the top offensive players in the entire country. The forward was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and awarded Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the conference. Matthews finished in a tie for tenth in the nation for goals scored with thirteen while only playing in fifteen games. That goals-per-game average of 0.87 was also good for fifth in the land. Through October and including the first game of November, Matthews was on a torrid pace. He scored eleven goals in just seven games, including a four-game stretch of eight goals, two in each game he played during that span. Putting this in perspective, the NCAA’s leading goal scorer last season, and current member of the MLS’s Colorado Rapids, Andre Shinyashiki scored ‘just’ eight goals in eight games over that same span. Matthews is going to hope to continue that stellar pace into the NPSL season.

In addition to his all-conference, and eventually United Soccer Coaches All-Regional Team, season, Matthews also was named NJCAA Player of the Year in 2016 during his sophomore season with Tyler. He led Tyler to a junior college national championship with 27 goals over the course of his season, and he was a vital member of the side that went to the final in his freshman season, as he scored nine goals. He was able to convert junior college success over to Division I with one of the best-known mid-major soccer programs in the country.

yazeed Portland program.jpg

Eric Rudland sees plenty of potential in his newest addition to his side’s strike force. “Yazeed is a proven goal scorer,” Rudland said. He would also add complimentary remarks about his unreal October, saying, “He had a great run of form during his time at Coastal Carolina and has the determination to continue chasing the game.” When talking about his own strengths, Matthews would add, “I would say my finishing and my ability to play and keep the ball for a player that’s considered to be “big”. Indeed, at 6’1”, Matthews add an element of size and strength up top, but he is wonderfully technical with the ball at his feet as well.

“I heard a lot of good things about the club and its achievements,” said Matthews, when talking about his familiarity with the side. “Yes, I met coach Eric at the combine,” he would also add, when asked about his first meeting with the AFCAA head man. Rudland clearly liked what he saw at the combine, and is looking forward to the striker’s impact with the club during the season as, in addition to highlight his collegiate output, he also added, “We think Yazeed is a great teammate and will be a solid addition to our club as a goal scoring threat in and around the 18yd box.”

Speaking to Matthews, he speaks very highly of his time at both CCU as well as Tyler. “It helped in the sense of getting use to the physical demands of the game,” Matthews said first of his two seasons with the Chants, “but my time at Tyler Junior College helped me a lot to develop as a player.” He would add, “Playing at Tyler Junior College helped [my] development tremendously.” He continued with high praise of the junior college level, saying that the player he is today was formed during those freshman and sophomore seasons. With such a high-level of player at the JuCo level, and both of the two players announced this week spending time at that level (Jacob Pacheco) along with plenty more AFCAA alums doing the same, Matthews is among great company with those who have done the same as he.

Looking ahead to the season, Matthews said, “I’m hoping to get back to playing regularly and being part of a team again and, of course, achieving as much as we can as a team.” Looking at a more personally-driven goal, he stated, “I’m hoping that it would also open doors of opportunity for me to achieve my goal of becoming a professional soccer player.” With members of The Mighty Oak playing already at various levels of professional soccer, Matthews is certainly in the right place for his development to continue.

Jacob Pacheco Becomes Newest Member of The Mighty Oak

DSC_1413.JPG

AFC Ann Arbor are excited to welcome Jacob Pacheco to the squad for the 2019 season. Pacheco will occupy a role in the defense on the right side of a center back pairing. Coming off of an incredibly successful sophomore campaign with Pima Community College, the New Mexico native will begin a career at Siena College in Loudonville, New York, starting with his upcoming junior season. Over his two seasons as an Aztec with PCC, Pacheco helped accumulate 45 wins and back-to-back trips to the NJCAA National Semifinals, winning the tournament in 2018-19.

In this past season’s national championship winning campaign, Pacheco featured in 27 matches, starting in 25 of those. Pima finished the season with a 26-2 record, including one of those losses in the first match of the season, and completing the year on an eighteen-game winning streak. This season saw seventeen clean sheets held by the Aztecs, including just two goals in nine matches during the entire month of October (both goals coming in the same match, which they won in overtime). It was a thrilling season for the team as a whole, as the clinched the title in a double-overtime thriller, but also for Pacheco, who in addition to his defensive exploits also chipped in with a pair of goals for his side.

When asked about what drew Pacheco to AFCAA, the defender said, “The success as a club is what initially drew me to the club and the amazing community support the club receives.” The community-based atmosphere helps draw in players from all over the globe, and Pacheco is another fine player that appreciates the support The Mighty Oak receives. With plenty of big game experience already and 41 games over two seasons under his belt, Pacheco is certainly coming to the right place to continue his development as a player.

Talking about his strengths, Eric Rudland sees a lot to like in his newest piece of the defense. He gave the 6’1” CB high praise when speaking about him, as he said, “Jacob is a right center back that we are really looking forward to working with. He is a fantastic all-around center back.” Talking more pointedly about Pacheco, Rudland also added, “He has mobility, size and keen insight tactically. He is a winner who has proven himself in our league and in the college game.” Indeed, in addition to his collegiate exploits, Pacheco was a member of last season’s 10-0-0 Laredo Heat side in the NPSL. Laredo went undefeated in the regular season and made their way through the Lone Star Conference playoff qualifiers before bowing out in the regional semifinal round.

Pacheco also discussed some of his strengths, which lend themselves well to the AFCAA system. “I believe my strengths are my ability to pass out of the back. I don’t like to kick the ball forward, I enjoy keeping possession,” he stated. With the Rudland system of playing solid football while avoiding the ‘direct’ breed of football that some fans lament, Pacheco’s range in positive passing from defense is a great sign. He also adds his belief that, “I am a strong leader and do well to motivate the players around me.”

A strong mental state has assisted Pacheco as a player, just as a willingness in continuing to grow also has. “In being persistent to always develop as a player mentally and technically it has allowed me to become a solid defender,” he told AFCAA. In talking about expectations for the club’s season to come, he said, “In this being my first season with AFCAA I expect to continue the winning mentality of the origination and help win another conference title.” His hopes for himself are just as well-meaning, as he says, “I hope this experience helps develop me as a player and a young man.”

There is no question that fans can look forward to hearing and seeing much more of the young defender in the side this season. As coach Rudland even says himself, “We expect him to be a big piece of our back [four] and team success this season.” With a final message for the fans of The Mighty Oak, Pacheco said, “I want the fans to know I appreciate [their] support and giving time the wonderful opportunity to represent their club. I’ll be looking forward to meeting them!” And in turn, so too will the fans enjoy getting acclimated with Pacheco, themselves.

About AFC Ann Arbor

Founded in 2014, Association Football Club Ann Arbor launched it’s men’s semi-pro team in 2015 and has competed in the NPSL since 2016. Led by Head Coach & Sporting Director, Eric Rudland, the team has found great success winning back to back Great Lakes Championships (‘17 & ‘18) and earning US Open Cup bids three straight years (2017-2019). In October 2018, the club announced the launch of the women’s side, who will be skippered by Andy “Pritch” Pritchard in their inaugural season of the United Women’s Soccer national league. Owned and operated by a group of local soccer fans and entrepreneurs, AFC Ann Arbor has become a fixture in the greater Ann Arbor community.

Jarred Dass Joins The Mighty Oak

11_Dass4.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor are excited to announce the signing of Jarred Dass for the 2019 season. Dass will join The Mighty Oak for his first season with the club, but he will not be unfamiliar with the club, nor all of the personnel. Dass will join Stony Brook teammate Stephen Turnbull with the club this season and will follow in the footsteps of Serge Gamwanya and nation-mate Moco Watson as other Seawolves to suit up for AFCAA. Coming off a successful junior season with the club, Dass will provide an added dose of immediate quality for the club’s attacking forces.

2018 was a breakout season for Dass, as the junior starred with Stony Brook even more so than the previous two seasons. A three-year starter, Dass’ junior season saw him score six goals and chip in three assists for his side en route to an American East regular season crown. His fifteen points throughout his junior season equaled the tally that Gamwanya produced as a senior with SB, with the six goals being a tie for the team-high with the AFCAA alum. Dass started the season with two goals in the first two games, and then finished strong with a stretch of three goals in three games.

On the connection with his teammates now for club and college, Dass said, “Turnbull told me a lot of great things and I’m happy that he will be returning with me.” In talking about what exactly Turnbull shared with him about the club, Dass noted, “The thing that stood out to me the most was when he told me about how professional the coaching staff is, and he also told me about how passionate the fans are and that really got me fired up.” The Stony Brooks contingent was extremely popular among fans for both their work ethic as well as successes on the pitch, and certainly Dass will be no different.

As a player, Eric Rudland sees plenty to like. “Dass is a special attacking player we are really excited to have with us. His versatility allows him to wreak havoc both centrally or out wide.” When talking about what makes him a special player, Dass humbly plays down his own successes. “I still have a lot to learn, but I’d have to say that my pace and skill has helped me to be a good player,” Dass notes about himself. He also adds, “I would have to say it’s my discipline and ability to be a team player that has made me a solid player.” Smarts and skill make for a dangerous combination, and these are things that the Trinidadian has in spades.

Not only is Dass experienced at the collegiate level, but like so many other members of The Mighty Oak, he has represented his country as well. “He has international experience with T&T at the U17, U20 & U23 levels and has become one of the most dangerous attacking players in the American East during his time at Stony Brook,” said Rudland of his ability on the collegiate and international level. When asked about why he decided Ann Arbor was the right place for him this summer, Dass also responded by pointing to his experience internationally saying, “As an international player I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone and put myself in a new environment. I wanted to give myself a new challenge to strengthen my mental skills as well as my physical skills. I am hoping that this experience will help in doing so.”

When it comes to the summer of 2019 for Dass, this is an opportunity to learn plenty of skills not just for now, but for the future. “I…want to gain more experience by playing in a professional environment so that I could transfer things learned at AFCAA into my school team for my next season,” Dass told AFCAA about his own personal hopes. With the coaching staff under Rudland consistently committed to helping players achieve higher levels on a collegiate level, it is no question that the Stony Brook front man has signed on for the right team.

As a message to the fans of the club, Dass said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the fans in full support!” He added, “I’m really excited to play with the club and I am confident that I will give everything I can to the club.” The pacey and skilled attacker is both versatile and dependable, making him a dangerous weapon for AFC Ann Arbor to be able to deploy during the season. Tree Town looks forward to welcoming home another member of the Stony Brook Seawolves for an exciting year of AFCAA football.

Andrea Garcia Joins AFC Ann Arbor Family

AndreaGarcia.jpeg

AFCAA welcomes Andrea Garcia to the women’s team! Garcia hails from Ontario, where she started her soccer career at a young age playing for King City Youth Soccer Club before playing for Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School. Garcia served as team captain and was voted three-time most valuable player. She led Cardinal Carter to a 2016 league title and an undefeated season all while graduating with honors.

Garcia currently plays at the collegiate level for Fairleigh Dickinson University where she is currently a sophomore. Her first year with FDC she played 233 minutes in nine games as a reserve midfielder. She logged her season-best 69 minutes at LIU Brooklyn. This past season she had one assist, 1 goal, 2 shots on goal with 5 shots total.

In the past, Garcia has played for Aurora FC, her hometown team where it was more than a club, it was a family. “Most of the girls from that team came from my prior team King City, where we grew as a close-knit family and accomplished incredible things together. A majority of us then played for Aurora and got excellent, high-intensity training before going off into our college careers.”

Although she leaves a close family club with Aurora FC, she joins the AFCAA Family off a referral from Jordan Montoya (returning men’s player) and is looking forward to playing for the inaugural women’s team this summer. “I’m excited to play with a new group of girls and coaching staff to extend my knowledge of the game and improve my skills with talented individuals. Getting new and different perspectives of the game and also getting different feedback will only benefit me. I’m also excited to make noise the same way the men’s team did last year.”

As a technically sound player, she sees value in possession and implements that in her game. She can’t wait to “use this asset and help the team work the ball wound the filed confidently, and I’m looking forward to finding creative ways to help the attacking players with scoring opportunities.”

Aidan Nam, Ann Arbor Native, Joins AFCAA Family

AFC Ann Arbor are pleased to announce the signing of Aidan Nam to The Mighty Oak for the 2019 season. No stranger to Ann Arbor, Nam is born and raised in Ann Arbor, having attended Saline high school before joining the University of Michigan Wolverines last season. Having been a commit to the Wolverines since 2016, two years before he would step on campus as a student, Nam is set on representing his hometown well both as a club player with AFCAA as well as on the university level. Nam sat out his freshman season with the Wolverines, however with two of the three starting midfielders for the Wolverines graduating, the opportunities will be there for Nam to try and earn playing time in the 2019 collegiate season.

While Nam attended Saline, he did not feature on their pitch, instead playing his club soccer with Crew SC Academy Wolves. In addition to his club and university exploits, he also featured for the U-14 and U-16 United States National Team. When talking about the experience of playing with a club in his hometown that is as decorated as The Mighty Oak are, Nam said, “Playing NPSL-level soccer in Ann Arbor means a lot to me, and I think that the club has established a good name for itself, and I plan to continue with promoting the brand and soccer that is played here in Ann Arbor.” He also noted that playing in front of friends and family will be a memorable experience for the local player.

The idea of playing with The Mighty Oak has been something that has always been present in Nam’s mind. “AFC Ann Arbor has always been a playing destination for me ever since the team was founded,” Nam told us. “Being from Ann Arbor, I knew right away that I wanted to get an opportunity to play for the city I've grown up in.” Given the nature of the NPSL and consistent changes in the roster composition, having local players who understand the community aspect of the club and its team-based culture as a whole is an immediate advantage if these are new players. Being from Ann Arbor certainly makes that prominent in Nam’s mind.

Not only is there the obvious local connection for Nam, but there is familiarity with the coach as well. “I also have known Coach Eric Rudland since I was ten, and I can't wait to get the opportunity to play for him for the first time after all of these years,” Nam revealed to AFC. He would also add that, “The organization as a whole, and the recent success of the club also made it an attractive squad to join.” Eric Rudland added, speaking to the importance of local representation, “It's exciting to have him with us and keep the connection alive between our club and local talent.”

As a player, there is plenty to look forward to when it comes to Nam. He shared some of his own personal strengths, saying, “I think some of my greatest strengths are my technical ability in the midfield and out wide as a winger, and also my creativity in the final third.” He would also add, “I also think I have good pace to go along with my technical and tactical awareness. I also have a good range of passing.” The versatility of playing on a wing or in the heart of the pitch, combined with the physical and mental attributes he possesses, makes Nam an exciting candidate for selection for the side. “Aidan still has a lot of capacity to grow as a player and we are excited to see him develop and contribute during our season,” Rudland added about the newest member of The Mighty Oak.

“I'm expecting a competitive training environment that will help me grow as a player and gain experience and knowledge by playing with the older guys in the group,” said Nam of early expectations for this season to come. “I'm hoping to compete for playing time, as I know there are a lot of guys on the team,” Nam also added, in acknowledge of the quality that he will be joining here in 2019. Hoping to bring in his experience as a player, he would conclude by saying to the fans, “I plan to represent the city of Ann Arbor well, and I can't wait to play in front of the community.”

AFCAA Welcomes Spencer Ward Back for 2019

AFC_3923.jpg

AFC Ann Arbor are proud to welcome back Spencer Ward to The Mighty Oak’s squad for the 2019 season. Ward will be extremely comfortable in The Mighty Oak’s new digs as he is coming off his second season with Concordia as the starting goalkeeper. Having spent the 2017 season with The Mighty Oak, Ward is extremely familiar with the set-up, the ground, and the location. A native of Rochester, Michigan, Ward will be returning for yet another exciting season and is joining an already strong stable of keepers with yet another outstanding netminder.

With Concordia, Ward was vital in net for the Cardinals. Eric Rudland distributed high praise to the keeper saying, “He is coming off an impressive season with Concordia. He single-handedly kept them in games and was a standout player.” Ward made an incredible 97 saves for the NAIA side last season, leading the WHAC in the category, and finished with a save-percentage of 78.2% and a GAA of 1.54. These stats and his play earned him a spot on the WHAC First Team All-Conference as a result. During last season, Ward helped Concordia to a five-game winning streak in which the Cardinals kept four clean sheets and only allowed a single goal. Ward, during this stretch, made 21 saves while only letting in the singular goal.

Upon his return, Ward answered the question of why was now the right time to return by saying, “The culture and expectations of AFCAA is what brought me back. At AFCAA, you are surrounded by an extremely qualified and passionate staff, pushing you to be your absolute best. There is nothing more a player could ask for from their club.” Not only does the set-up of the club help, but the move to Ward’s collegiate home is also a massive bonus. “As a member of the Concordia men's program, I'm stoked to call Concordia's field home this summer,” Ward told AFCAA. “The facilities are amazing, and I'll feel right at home for AFCAA matches.” A long-term home for The Mighty Oak brings joy not just for the fans, but certainly for the players as well.

On his return, Rudland said, “It is great to have Spencer return to be with us after the impact he made in 2017. He is coming off an impressive season with Concordia…I think he has grown greatly in confidence since his time with us [two] seasons ago and he has all of the tools to be [an] impact GK in our league.” Ward spoke of his impact attributes that he has in his arsenal as he said, “My experience in high level programs and ability as a well-rounded goalkeeper are my strengths. Since an academy player I've been in high-demand positions requiring sound ability as a shot-stopper who can also use both feet to play out of pressure situations.” Indeed, the player spent time with both DePaul and Coastal Carolina, a pair of Division I programs, before coming back a bit closer to home.

These play-based factors are all key, but perhaps the most important ones for the upcoming season are those that can only be built up with time. “The relationships and trust I have with other returning AFCAA players such as Jake Rosen, Jake Rufe, and James Vaughan, give me that much more confidence in goal,” Ward stated. He provided an additional personal goal to bring the success from his outstanding collegiate season into the club season. With the knowledge he has of players coming into the season, that goal certainly should not be far off from reality at all.

A starter over three games in 2017, including holding a clean sheet to make sure The Mighty Oak secured an undefeated record at home, Ward looks back fondly on that season and is excited to get back. “The professional environment created by the owners, staff, and fans, helped my game grow tremendously that summer,” he stated about how the year bettered him. He also added that “being pushed everyday in training” made him a better player as he learned from his fellow keeper that season, TJ Tomasso. As a sort of message for the fans of the club, Ward said, “I'm extremely excited to be back with the club, and looking forward to the awesome environment the fans bring to all of our matches.” Those surrounding the club are just as excited to welcome him back for another season with the squad.

Nevello Yoseke Joins AFC Ann Arbor for 2019 Campaign

nevello.jpeg

AFC Ann Arbor are thrilled to announce the signing of Nevello Yoseke to The Mighty Oak’s 2019 roster. Yoseke is a 23-year-old with first team experience high-level overseas, and international experience for the Canadian U-17s. Moving with his family from Sudan to Egypt as a refugee at just the age of four, then Egypt to Ottawa at the age of eleven, Yoseke is not merely a superb player, but a true success story and a testament to hard work and maintaining hope. As a player in Canada, Yoseke spent time with the Montreal Impact’s youth teams before playing overseas, most recently in the third-tier of Swedish football.

Starting with his history as a youth Canadian national, Yoseke was a member of a squad that traveled to the UAE to take on the likes of Argentina and Austria in the U-17 World Cup in 2013. He featured in the Canadian’s game against Austria. Canada finished behind Argentina, who had players like Emanuel Mammana, Sebastian Druissi (both now with Zenit), and Christian Pavon (eleven caps with Argentina’s senior team), and Iran. This was also the same tournament that the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, formerly of Manchester City) and Nathan (out on loan from Chelsea) made their first global impact. Playing at a high level since a young age has allowed Yoseke to be around elite set-ups and given him access to some of the highest levels of coaching and teammates one can find at the U-17 level.

On the higher-level, Yoseke continued his development even at a young age. After a stellar performance for the Montreal Impact’s U-18 side, Yoseke was signed on for his first full season with FC Montreal, the then-USL affiliate of the Impact, in the summer of 2015. He made 25 appearances despite still being just a teenager before moving over to Europe where he spent a season with Oskarshamm AIK in Sweden. He bounced from there to AS Saint-Priest for three months, however he encountered visa issues and was unable to be signed. Since then, however, he has remained fit by training with his hometown USL Championship side, the Ottawa Fury.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Yoseke offers an entirely new aspect for the team. “Basically, I’m a very, very, very hard worker, I have good stamina, I can read the game very well. I can win a lot of balls in the air, on the ground…I’m very good at one-vs-ones [and] building from the back and helping the team go forward.” The three ‘very’s were not for dramatic effect. Yoseke covers a ton of ground and is able to pick out spots that teams are vulnerable and capitalize with strong tackles to win the ball. Eric Rudland highlighted his new midfielder’s key intrinsic attributes saying, “[Bringing] a player into our team with that type of experience will be a great asset for our club. He is also a versatile player who can play as a defensive center mid or in the backline.” Indeed, Yoseke can also fill in at right back when needed. The positional fluidity combined with the brilliant defense mind allows Yoseke to have the potential for an immediate impact.

His road to AFCAA came from, like so many, a personal connection. “I found out through a friend who used to play with [AFC]… he told me about Eric, he told me about the environment and how the community, it’s a very close community,” he said to AFCAA. He expanded upon that, saying, “Everybody is close to each other, it’s almost like a family.” It is yet another prime example of the AFCAA Family meaning something much more to players, staff, and fans alike than just a saying. “I spoke to Eric before, I spoke to him on the phone before making the decision. It was basically a conversation about the club and the vision of the club and what to expect coming there,” Yoseke said of his conversation with the head coach. The conversation would seem to have been the icing on the cake for Yoseke, who mentioned how he did his own independent research of the club as well.

Perhaps given his high level of play in the past, Yoseke’s expectations have been high right out the gate. “I want to really come in and win every single game and basically take the team to the top even, you know about the U.S. Open Cup,” he said to AFCAA, referring to the national cup competition the team will be a part of for the third consecutive year, the longest active stretch out of any team that has been a member of the NPSL for that duration. “I told Eric I really want to take the team as far as we can go, so my expectations are to go there and play as best as we can play and win every single game we can.” They are lofty hopes, but the level of experience he has allows Yoseke to make these goals for himself, with strong determination to see them out.

Talking to the fans, Yoseke said, “I promise I will bring them something completely different to the team and the team will be very enjoyable to watch.” He would add that, “It’ll be a really fun season to watch in terms of going far to the finals and winning cups and everything.” Wrapping up, the Canadian midfielder would then say, “The fans can expect a very, very different, and very successful, year.” With the season around the corner, this should only serve to spur excitement forward for the summer to come.

Alayne Nyboer Joins The Mighty Oak

alayne.jpg

Association Football Club Ann Arbor is happy to announce Alayne Nyboer, midfielder, to the women’s team. This Grandville, MI native currently plays for Lawrence Technological University (LTU) where she is completing her junior year. She’ll be no stranger to our home pitch at Concordia University this summer as LTU plays against the Cardinals in the same division.

In the past, she has jumped between summer teams as a way to stay in shape and get touches on the ball. Playing for AFC this summer gives her the chance to not only stay in shape but she is “hoping not just to maintain my game, but improve it” to carry her through her senior year at LTU. She’s excited to play with high-level players and grow individually with the team.

After hearing nothing but good things about the men’s program Noyber knew the standard with the women’s program would be the same and was something she knew she wanted to be a part of. Through conversations with the coaching staff, she said, “it was obvious they want both the team and the players to be as successful as possible so I know that I’ll be in good hands.”

As the women’s team gears up for their inaugural season Nyboer is ready to set a successful tone for seasons to come and considers it a great honor to be a part of the first year. She can’t wait to experience the game atmosphere that the men’s program and the fans have already created.
